4 Tips for One-on-One Play
During a basketball game there will be many situations where players will be dealing with one on one play. It can be guarding the basket, following the ball, preventing a shot or whatever is happening that dictates players going directly against another player on the opposing team.
One on one play is very important to the game. It is something that players must practice and that they must master in order to be an effective basketball player. No player can be good without learning the basics of one on one play.
The following four tips outline some important things to keep in mind when practicing one on one play or during a game when you are using one on one tactics.
Tip #1 Master Stationary Moves
Stationary moves are used once you have the ball. You will either step and pass off to another player or square up to the basket and shoot. You should practice them with another player or a couple other players. You want to master shooting, catching and passing. It is important during stationary moves that you are aware at all times. You do not want to get a violation for holding the ball or have the ball stolen by opposing players.
Tip #2 Have a Strong Side Drive Strategy
When you get the ball and are trying to get around a defender you need strong moves to do so. A strong side drive will allow you to fake out the defender so you can take advantage of his reaction and move around him or pass off the ball. You need to be able to react quickly to whatever the reaction of the defender is. You should be prepared for every possibility so that your reactions become second nature. You have a split second to decide what your move will be so you have to have your moves perfected.
Tip #3 Master the Cross Over Step
The cross over step is used after a side drive. The crossover prevents the player from getting wrapped up in his own feet and falling. It is a coordinated move that allows the player to be fluid and quick when cutting back to dodge the guard. Every player should practice doing a jab step then cross over step. This is essential to being able to get to the basket and in moving around opposing players.
Tip #4 Know When to Dribble and When not to Dribble
Dribbling is often given a lot of attention in the beginning when a player is learning the game. It helps improve coordination and gets the player comfortable with handling the ball.
The problem with dribbling, though, is that there are many violations that can be called due to errors or slip ups when dribbling. It is too easy to make a simple mistake and get fouled.
Another issue with dribbling is that it is a slow method of moving the ball. It is best used to stall or travel a short way with the ball. Dribbling should not be relied upon as the main method of moving the ball. That should be reserved for passing.

New England Wraps Up NFL Preseason With Win Over NY Giants
Undrafted Brian Hover played the entire game for the Patriots and may have earned himself a position as Tom Brady’s backup with a solid all around performance as New England topped the New York Giants 38-27 in the NFL preseason finale for both clubs. Hover passed for 242 yards and no interceptions on 18 of 25 passing. Most impressively, he didn’t get rattled as the Giants broke from the gate quickly to post a 21-0 first quarter lead.
NFL football betting enthusiasts who took New England as +3 road underdogs cashed their tickets with the outright win. The Patriots evened their preseason ATS mark at 2-2, while the Giants dropped to 1-3 against the number. New York won and covered their first game of the preseason before dropping the next three straight up and against the spread.
A free agent pickup out of Michigan State, Hover threw for one touchdown and led three more long drives that culminated in paydirt. BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed for three touchdowns and after the game gave his endorsement of Hover’s play:
“Brian did a good job of controlling our offense. We mixed it up.”
Green-Ellis had an impressive game himself, with 125 yards on 29 carries to go with the three rushing touchdowns. Afterwards, Patriots coach Bill Belichick had clipped but positive comments about his play:
“Ben does a lot of things for us going back to last year.
As well as the performance of QB Hover:
“Not bad. He handled the ball fairly well, threw it accurately.”
The Giants biggest personnel decision at the moment is their third string QB, where Andre Woodson has the inside track despite a less than stellar performance. Afterwards, he gave his take on the game:
“It took me a while to get into my rhythm and it was the worst possible game to have that happen. Last year I knew I was going to be cut. … This year is different. It’s going to be tense.”
Starting QB Eli Manning played one series and backup David Carr played three. Afterwards, Manning summed up his teams mindset:
“I think everyone is ready for the season to get going and start playing for real.
The Giants will start playing for real next Sunday as they host the Washington Redskins in a NFC East battle. Theyll head to Dallas in week two for another divisional tilt against the Cowboys. The Patriots will start their regular season next Monday night as they host the Buffalo Bills. Theyll hit the road in week two for a game at the Meadowlands against the New York Jets.

4 Good Shots in Basketball
There are many different shots a player can take in a basketball game. These four are the most common and the ones that coaches prefer you to use. These four good shots help to ensure you will actually make the basket and limit on court antics.

Shot #1: Set shot

The jump shot is made in the air while jumping. The ball must be shot while you are in the air. If the ball is not shot before your feet touch the ground, then it is a foul. The lay up is a motion shot. It is made while the player runs and jumps towards the basket. Most often in a lay up the backboard is used to guide the ball into the hoop. The player will come from the side of the hoop to make a lay up.
Shot #4: Slam dunk
The slam dunk is one of the most exciting shots in the game. People love to watch a slam dunk. It is a power shot and requires the ability for a player to reach the basketball hoop in order to actually put the ball into the basket. It can be done from almost any angle, but is usually a straight on shot at the basket.
It requires a player be able to completely avoid the guard and get good access to the hoop. The player will get height so he is over the hoop and the ball is thrown down instead of up as with most other types of shots.
These four shots are not the only shots that can be made in the game. There are other shots that are commonly used, but coaches will try to get players to use these four shots as much as possible. That is because these four shots allow the player more control and accuracy. Most of the time these shots will result in scoring when used by players who have practiced them regularly.
